Russell stunner as Britain dominates home grid
Hamilton second, Verstappen third as Red Bull gamble backfires
George Russell took a sensational maiden pole position at the British Grand Prix as home drivers locked out the top three places. Lewis Hamilton will start alongside his Mercedes team-mate after beating Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a thrilling qualifying session. Verstappen had led for much of the session but a late gamble on intermediate tyres backfired as the rain held off. The Dutchman will start third ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Racing Point's Sergio Perez. It is the first time since 2008 that three British drivers have taken the top three positions on a Formula 1 grid. Russell, who is standing in for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes this weekend, will be the first British driver since Lewis Hamilton in 2018 to start from pole at Silverstone.
